We recently had the opportunity to do a gluten-free menu tasting and restaurant review for one of my favorite “fast food” places. Chipotle is all about using the highest quality ingredients in their meals. From meat with no antibiotics or hormones who are raised humanely and in open fields to buying local, often organic produce from farmers and cutting it fresh in house everyday, Chipotle goes above and beyond to provide its customers with only the best ingredients. Their famous guacamole is so delicious in large part because they cut, scoop and mash every avocado in house daily to make their guacamole. Only lime juice and salt are added but boy, it is delicious! (I still remember from before I found out about my avocado allergy and my husband still raves about it. Their corn chips are made from white, non-gmo corn tortillas and are cut and fried fresh daily in a dedicated gluten-free fryer. They also use sunflower oil in the fryers, as to avoid using one with soy. The monterey jack and white cheddar blend that they use is fresh and with no preservatives. Because of this, it only has a 2 day shelf life but you can rest assured knowing you are getting extremely fresh ingredients when ordering with Chipotle. They pride themselves in putting love, time and effort into all their ingredients as they prep them each day. For this reason, there are no microwaves or freezers. They also never charge extra for any toppings with the exception of meat and guacamole.
When a person comes into Chipotle and specifies that they must eat gluten-free the entire line stops while it is cleaned and all the spoons and utensils are changed to clean, sanitized ones. Then one person assists you from start to finish only after removing their old gloves, washing their hands and putting no new, clean gloves. The only thing that contains gluten in the entire establishment are the flour soft tortillas which they are mindful to keep away from the gluten-free corn ones. There are amazing dishes like tacos, nachos, salads and burrito bowls to choose from when dining gluten-free at Chipotle. Here is what we enjoyed and our thoughts.
Corn Chips & Guacamole: These are truly the BEST chips and guacamole my husband and I have ever had. I love that they are made in a dedicated fryer (as that is necessary with celiac disease) and that I can rest assured knowing my belly won’t be puffy after eating them due to gmo corn. Their white, non-gmo corn chips are delicious and perfectly crisp. The guacamole is creamy and rich in flavor with a slight tangy, salty bite that marries perfectly with the corn chip.
Chicken Burrito Bowl: The chicken is the spiciest meat in house and of course, I loved that! My two and four year old weren’t as happy about the spiciness level but for me the spice coupled with the cool, smooth sour cream and crisp veggies was amazing! The beans (we did a mix of both pinto and black) and rice gave the dish a hearty, filling aspect that definitely filled us up.
Steak Salad: I was very impressed at how tender and flavorful these strips of steak were. I am not usually the biggest steak eater but in this salad, it made it a meaty and filling. I liked the chipotle adobo flavors and nice sear from the grill.
Carnitas Tacos: The carnitas meat is our absolute favorite!! We love how tender and flavorful it is. It is spicy from black pepper but almost has a fruity after note from the berry they use when braising it. After hours of braising, it is fall of the bone tender and easily shredded. The non-gmo, white corn tortilla was the perfect vessel for this delicous meat and all the veggies, salsa, cheese and/or sour cream. These were the best tacos I have had before!
Our experience was a great one and Chipotle is a restaurant we will definitely go back to for a safe, healthy and delicious gluten-free meal!! Chipotle also caters gluten-free so you can enjoy them in the comfort of your home or at your next event.
Please remember that not all Chipotle restaurants are as educated as mine is. The manager, Devon, was so knowledgeable and sat down to discuss everything with us. She is very understanding of the need of those with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten-sensitivity. Remember you are your own advocate and must work with your location if they aren’t doing these things to ensure that they can start implementing them.
