Finally, a Mexican restaurant that has a gluten free menu that includes corn tortilla chips fried in a dedicated fryer! I love chips and salsa and am so happy I can finally enjoy them without the worry of gluten cross-contamination. Manuels is also very conscious of cross-contamination issues throughout the rest of the kitchen. There is a portion of the grill dedicated to gluten free, however, when it is absolutely needed for other products it will be cleaned and scrubbed with a brick before being considered for gluten free cooking again. Manuels is a family owned restaurant since 1964. There are several valley locations each knowledgeable in gluten free. All new hires to the restaurant receive a special gluten free awareness training. I just loved hearing this. It gave me peace knowing that everyone in house is educated on gluten free living and the risks for those with celiac disease dining out. Another great thing about Manuels is that nearly everything is made in house and prepped not just once a day but twice as to keep things even more fresh. I loved hearing that! Manuels won the Best Neighborhood Restaurant award, a great honor.
We began our meal with the corn chips, fried in a dedicated fryer, along with delicious made-in-house salsa. Both were very good and full of flavor. The spice level was perfect and very enjoyable. We also enjoyed the Espinaca dip, a cheesy, spinach dip with a little tomato sauce. It was very strong in cheese flavor and held up better when dipped with meat rather than just a corn chip. The taste was good and we were told it is made from real cheese everyday.
For dinner we had two entrees. The first first was the beef fajitas with corn tortillas. The meat was seasoned so well. The peppers and onions were sauteed so well. They were the perfect accompaniment to the meat. The second entree we presented with was the Machaca Dinner with corn tortillas, seasoned rice and beans. The rice was amazing! One of the best I have ever tasted. I loved all the spice and the addition of tomato and onions. The beans tasted very fresh and authentic. The guacamole served with it was also very fresh and full of great flavor. The creamy texture was also very nice.
For dessert we had THE BEST flan I have ever eaten, and I have eaten flan in Mexico! It was firm and smooth instead of jiggly like many flans I have had before. It was creamy and perfect in texture. The caramel flavor was so just right and not too overwhelming. This flan was the perfect way to end a delicious gluten free meal.
