Recently we dined at restaurant we had been wanting to check out for a while now, Fired Up Grill. We had heard wonderful things about their gluten free menu and safe handling practices that we knew we just had to see what they were all about. What a treat for us that we did! We had a wonderful meal as well as enjoyed meeting the very kind owner, Joe Busone. It was so great learning that he is very conscious of cross contamination issues that can happen in a restaurant kitchen and how he does everything possible to avoid them. Joe has a dedicated fryer for things that he wants to keep gluten free for one thing. Different pots for gluten free pasta is just another precaution Joe takes in keeping his kitchen cross contamination free. Not only is Joe a wise gluten free chef, but a very good one at that. Fired Up Grill won Best of 2009 Ahwatukee Foothills News 1st place for his food. I now know why. Joe is a visionary and loves the challenge of creating any dish he can gluten free for his guests. I know that I appreciate that as I am sure many others eating gluten free do as well. Here is how our evening went.
We began with the delicious, gluten free Chicken Flautas. They were amazing! Presentation was excellent. We loved the fiery spice of the fresh jalapenos that arrived on top of the yummy flautas. The filling tasted very fresh with the corn. The cream sauce was a unique yet delicious touch.
Bruschetta was the next thing to arrive to us. Using gluten free bread, fresh tomatoes and basil created a gluten free version of this classic favorite. I probably would have like the bread a little more toasty but all in all, loved the flavor and again, the great presentation.
The Fired Up house salad we ate was dressed very well with just enough lettuce and toppings. I loved the marinated mushrooms and kalamata olives. They were bold tastes that blended well with the fresh dark greens and unique dressing.
Pasta De Mar was an amazing dish! The moment the bowl was set in front of me, my eyes begin eating and couldn’t wait for my mouth to join. The presentation was absolutely gorgeous! The chardonnay sauce was amazing. The garlic flavor was the perfect accent to the perfectly steamed clams, shrimp and scallops. The pasta was cooked just right and my cousin couldn’t even tell it was gluten free. Yum!
Pepperoni Pizza was our final entree and was nicely done. The crust was thin and a little crispy. The cheese was melted perfectly and I loved that the pepperoni were the large ones. It made the pizza itself seem so much more appetizing.
Finally, we enjoyed a delicious dessert. The Fu-zookie was AMAZING!!! Gluten free chocolate chip half-baked cookies topped with cool, sweet vanilla bean ice cream…need I say more? The cookies were the best I have ever had reminding me of yummy cookie dough. The chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream on top only made this already tasty dessert even better.
