If you have ever been to The JW Marriott Desert Ridge in Scottsdale, AZ than you know how gorgeous of a place it is. From the moment you pull onto property you are swept away into a desert paradise. Arriving at night is even more of a treat with lighting on the trees that mimics water falling. It couldn’t be more illuminatingly beautiful. The Blue Sage restaurant on property is an extension to the beauty with its native American decor and open patio with oversized fireplace and outdoor lighting. The live music lends to the wonderful ambiance. Senior Sous Chef Cameron Handler and Sous Chef Ryan Lamkin were the perfect hosts for our evening at Blue Sage restaurant. Both men were very educated on gluten free living and the concerns of cross-contamination. They are very careful in all their preparations. For example, the deep fryer oil is changed every day and the first thing that gets fried in the morning is the corn tortilla strips for the gluten free chicken tortilla soup. I really appreciated that this was something they already knew to do in their kitchen to avoid cross-contamination. All our questions were answered with ease and comfort which gave me great peace in eating out at this restaurant. The following are the dishes the chefs wanted to feature off of their gluten free menu.
First to our table was the plate of oat and white gluten free bread and butter. Both are made by Gluten Free Creations Bakery in Phoenix. The oat was a sweeter, softer, more flavorful bread while the white was a nice crispy crusted bread more appropriate as a base for something else, such as butter and jam.
For Appetizer: We enjoyed the Hummus and gluten free crackers and veggies. The hummus was so delicious, very fresh and full of flavor. Arriving with just a drizzle of oil, feta cheese and chives was the perfect touch for both flavor and presentation. The gluten free crackers that accompanied it were the best I have ever eaten, with an excellent flaky yet crunchy texture like you expect from a really good cracker. Fresh carrots, celery, orange cauliflower, green beans and radishes gave us many great options for dipping. The cauliflower was especially tasty in the creamy hummus.
The second appetizer we were presented with was the chicken tortilla soup made from scratch. The soup was warm but not hot, truly the perfect temperature for soup. It was lightly spiced and seasoned very well. Fresh pulled chicken breast, jalapenos cilantro, roasted tomatoes fill this yummy soup. Sour cream, fresh, cool avocado and crispy corn tortilla strips top it off. The consistency was very unique and fun, almost like a homemade tomato soup. Yum!
For our entrees: We had the salmon and mixed green salad plate. The salmon was cooked to perfect and seasoned very well. Perfectly crisp on the outside and fork tender inside was just to my liking. The salad had fresh, sun dried tomatoes, sauteed mushrooms, and asparagus mixed with dark leafy greens. It was dressed perfectly and tasted great.
Pork Tenderloin and apple cherry chutney with potato puree and Brussels sprouts was our second entree. The pork was the most delicious I have ever eaten. The chef let us know it is brined for four hours to get it that fork tender. The potato puree was smooth and silky with excellent flavor. The Brussels sprouts were seasoned so well and sauteed perfectly for great color and flavor.
For Dessert: We received my favorite, creme brulee! It was everything I love and expect of a proper creme brulee. Perfectly smooth and creamy texture inside, a crunchy bruleed topping and great vanilla bean flavor all created a wonderful dessert. Blackberries, blueberries and strawberries gave a great topping to an already wonderful dish.
Our second dessert was the vanilla infused citrus segments and sorbet. The tart and sweet balanced out very well giving a very refreshing dessert. The taste was similar to a dreamsicle but more refined.
We had a wonderful evening at Desert Sage and know all of you would as well. Keep in mind that during the weekend there is a lovely brunch buffet served with a special section for gluten free pastries and items provided by Gluten Free Creations Bakery.
