Outback Steakhouse gluten free review…

We had the wonderful pleasure of doing a gluten free menu tasting at our local Outback Steakhouse. Thank you Kristy Haase for getting everything set up and serving us so well. It was a wonderful experience!

We started our meal off by ordering the signature “Naturally skinny ‘rita” virgin style. It was cool and refreshing, a little more salty and less sweet than a traditional margarita but still very tasty. The fresh squeezed orange juice really made the drink I think.

For our appetizer, we shared the “Grilled shrimp on the Barbie” with spicy remoulade. I LOVED this sauce and actually requested some with my entrees after being told by Kristy that most people enjoy it as a dipping sauce with their meal. I was glad I listened because it just added to anything I put it on.

We were then served the new “California Chicken Salad” that had feta, grilled chicken, cabbage and green apples along with a delicious vinaigrette. I am not usually a fan of apples on salad but in this case it worked, and it actually worked very well. There was enough savory with the chicken, feta and dressing to keep it from feeling too sweet with the apples. Instead, they added a great texture and tang to the salad.

For dinner we were given a few different entrees to sample. Kristy says she chose the gluten free menu items she did because all but one of them comes exactly as it normally would whether ordering gluten free or not. She said it is always nice to order something that you don’t have to feel like is missing this or missing that but instead, it is gluten free regularly. Kristy let me know that proper cleaning measures are taken with the kitchen and cooking the gluten free items. She let me know that the grill is used only for the meat and that it is all gluten free. She said that just in case something was ever put on there that shouldn’t have been though, that they clean it thoroughly before each gluten free entree is fired.

Ribs and Chicken combo with garlic mashed potatoes- Yum! These were the most tender, delicious ribs I have ever had. The meat was perfectly cooked as well as seasoned to perfection. The not-to-sweet barbecue sauce added another dimension that was very tasty. The chicken was tender and also seasoned very well. This was one of my husbands favorite items. The meat came with a dressed baked potato that was cooked just right and topped with cool, creamy sour cream and cheese. Yum!

Grilled Pork Chop with orange marmalade sauce and Brown Sugar topped Sweet Potato- My son kept saying he wanted more “candy” after tasting the sweet potato. He was right, it was so yummy that we all wanted more of it’s sweet “candy” flavor. The pork chop was nice and tender and cooked to the perfect temperature. Served along side the orange marmalade it created a very homey, comforting meal which I really enjoyed.

We then had two cuts of beef including the New York strip and the wood fired ribeye steak. We LOVED the wood fire grill flavor infused into the ribeye. It was a rustic, woodsy flavor that any steak lover would be pleased to taste. The New York strip was seasoned so beautifully and cooked to perfection. I really enjoyed this steak a lot which says how good it was, as I would never voluntarily order a steak. This specific steak however, I would order again and again. The potatoes were tasty and delicious as real mashed potatoes usually are. They were everything I would want from mashed potatoes.

The “Hearts of Gold Mahi” was the final entree we savored and it was delicious. Fish cooked perfectly topped with sun dried tomatoes and artichoke hearts it was light, yet very flavorful. Served with tasty asparagus, this meal wasn’t lacking anything.

For dessert, we were given both gluten free desserts. The “Chocolate Thunder From Down Under” and the “Sydney’s Sinful Sundae”. I figured that the flourless chocolate brownie topped with creamy vanilla ice cream, fresh whipped cream and chocolate curls was going to be the winner no questions asked. However, when the sundae arrived with it’s vanilla ice cream coated in toasted coconut and hot fudge sauce with whipped cream on top, I decided to at least give it a chance. Boy, was I glad I did! That was one of the most tasty scoops of ice cream I have ever had! The Blue Bell ice cream was so creamy and delicious but the toasted coconut really made the dish. Then with the hot fudge dipping sauce and fluffy whipped cream…I was in dessert heaven. The brownie was also delicious but was not match for that toasted coconut ice cream. I will return and order that every time.

Overall, the service was stellar. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was very pleasant. The new gluten free menu is extensive and full of great choices for any gluten free diner. We absolutely loved our Outback Steakhouse gluten free experience and would suggest it to anyone.
