Malee’s Thai Bistro Restaurant Feature and Review

The food at Malee’s is so delicious you will be dreaming of it that evening. This is hands down, the best Thai food I have ever eaten. My friend, Calli, who accompanied me to this review, said the Tom Ka Gai soup was the best thing she has ever eaten in her life! Let me tell you a little more about what we ate…

To start, we met the adorable owner, Deirdre. She was such great company to us throughout the meal. She told us how she and her restaurant partner have been working together for many years to create the ultimate in authentic Thai cuisine. She is very knowledgeable about gluten free living and celiac disease as is her entire staff. In 2000 they really went in depth with creating as many gluten free options on their menu as possible and have continued to do so ever since. With everything being so fresh and made in house it makes it quite easy to accommodate not only gluten free diners but vegetarians as well. At Malee’s everything from the fresh ground chili paste to the homemade icecream are all made on site and fresh. Nothing already prepared is brought in with the exception of the gluten free soy sauce and gluten free oyster sauce they use. Using all of these great ingredients really opens up the possibilities of what can be made gluten free. Deirdre said they feel, “a tremendous responsibility” to accommodate all dietary needs and loves doing so. The great thing about Malee’s Thai Bistro is that not only do they love accommodating gluten free diners but they know exactly how to do so properly. With everything from the ticket being put into the computer and a big gluten free warning coming up for the kitchen, to the very careful preparation to the actual quality of ingredients, Malee’s does gluten free right.

Our delectable Thai food journey began with the famous Tom Ka Gai soup in a gorgeous and ornate serving bowl that had a lit fire to keep the soup at the absolute perfect temperature. Presentation alone of this dish was stunning however, the moment that special soup touched my lips I knew I would never be able to eat just any Thai food again. Truly, this soup was so incredibly delicious that I wanted more immediately after leaving…and I was full! As I said before, my friend Calli said, “This. Is. The. Best. Thing. I. Have. Ever. Eaten.” Now Calli is a foodie like myself so for her to use this wording was quite an honor to this restaurant and their preparation of this unique and delicious soup. This soup is Malee’s take on a hot and sour soup with coconut milk, chicken, mushrooms and cilantro. Gluten free fish sauce, galangal and lemongrass (which cannot be eaten) added even more depth to this soup. You just couldn’t stop eating it because with each bite you discovered a new, delicious taste. Just the galangal itself had an exotic flavor unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. It is peppery with tones of pine and citrus. That along with the creamy coconut milk and special taste of the lemongrass made you feel as though you are eating a dish fit only for a king (or queen in my case :). I cannot say enough about his amazing soup so I will leave it at this. It is stunning in both taste and presentation.

How can you even enjoy anything after that amazing of a dish you wonder? Thanks goodness that Malee’s has more than one delicious dish on their menu. In fact, they have many. We enjoyed cool, refreshing, summer rolls that were filled with chicken, rice noodles and mint and were rolled in a rice paper liner. You could absolutely tell that the rolls were made fresh to order. I loved that the were as large as they were. I am used to summer rolls being small so this larger version was a pleasant surprise. The gluten free dipping sauce complimented the freshness of the roll nicely.

Finally we enjoyed the Chicken Panang, a very tasty dish. It is a kaffir, lime curry with coconut cream served over chicken carrots and bell peppers. Again, the flavors were like dynamite in your mouth giving you the overwhelming sense of joy you get when you KNOW you are eating amazing food. The spice level was perfect and the dish itself was warm and filling.

Again, I cannot say enough good things about Malee’s Thai Bistro. If you are EVER in Arizona, it is absolutely worth your time to eat there. If you know your Thai food, you will know without a doubt, that you are getting the freshest, most high quality, delicious Thai food around.
